Key Ideas
1. Pick One Thing
The Highlight is the single most important activity you want to protect each day. Instead of drowning in an endless to-do list or reacting to everyone else's priorities, you choose ONE thing that will make the day feel meaningful. It's not about doing more — it's about doing what matters. Some days your Highlight is a work project, some days it's dinner with your family. The power is in the choosing, not the achieving. When you pick your Highlight before the day starts, you give your hours a center of gravity.
2. Infinity Pool
Infinity Pools are apps and platforms designed to be bottomless — social feeds, news sites, email inboxes, streaming queues. They refill faster than you can drain them, which is the point. They're engineered to keep you scrolling with variable rewards, autoplay, and infinite content. The problem isn't willpower — the design is working exactly as intended. Recognizing Infinity Pools by name is the first step to building barriers between you and the drain on your attention.
3. Laser Mode
Laser is the second step of the Make Time framework — once you've chosen your Highlight, you need to actually focus on it by beating distractions. This means creating conditions for deep focus: closing unnecessary tabs, putting your phone in another room, blocking time on your calendar, and saying no to interruptions. Laser mode isn't about superhuman concentration — it's about designing your environment so that the default is focus, not distraction. You make it easy to stay on task and hard to get pulled away.
4. Charge the Battery
Energize is the third step of the Make Time framework. Your brain doesn't run on willpower — it runs on energy. If you're exhausted, no productivity system in the world will save you. The authors recommend acting like a caveman: move your body daily, eat real food, optimize sleep, spend time with people face-to-face, and get outside. These aren't wellness trends — they're the biological baseline your body evolved to need. When your energy is high, focus comes naturally and your Highlight gets done without a fight.
5. Default Settings
Modern life runs on default settings that weren't designed for your wellbeing — they were designed for corporations. The default is to check email first thing in the morning, to keep notifications on, to say yes to every meeting, to fill every quiet moment with a screen. These defaults feel normal because everyone follows them, but they systematically steal your time and attention. Make Time's entire system is about questioning defaults and replacing them with intentional choices. You don't need a radical life overhaul — you just need to change the settings.
6. Reflect and Rewrite
Reflect is the fourth and final step of the Make Time framework. At the end of each day, you spend a few minutes reviewing what happened: Did you make time for your Highlight? How well did Laser mode work? What gave you energy and what drained it? You score yourself honestly and note what to try differently tomorrow. This isn't journaling or meditation — it's a quick, practical audit. The power of Reflect is iteration: you're not following a rigid system, you're running daily experiments on your own life and fine-tuning what works for you specifically.
7. Someday Starts Tonight
The deepest truth in Make Time isn't a productivity hack — it's a reckoning with mortality. 'Someday' is the most dangerous word in the English language because it implies infinite future. Someday I'll write the book. Someday I'll learn guitar. Someday I'll spend more time with my kids. But the days are finite, and they pass whether or not you fill them with what matters. Make Time's urgency isn't about efficiency — it's about the recognition that the only time you can make is now. Not tomorrow. Not next quarter. Tonight.
