The anchoring effect means your brain latches onto the first number it hears and adjusts from there — even when that number is completely random. Ask people 'Is the population of Chicago more or less than 5 million?' and they guess higher than people asked 'More or less than 200,000?' The anchor pulls you toward it, invisibly, even when you know it's arbitrary.
